10 Oct Aldersgate: 230+ acres of serving the greater good
When you think of a retirement community, what comes to mind? Perhaps a peaceful environment with lush greenery, comfortable living spaces and opportunities for activities?
While Aldersgate certainly offers all of that and more, there’s something deeper happening under the surface. Situated on 232 acres of picturesque land, Aldersgate exemplifies what it means to be a non-profit organization deeply committed to its residents and to the broader Charlotte community.
A Vibrant Community Hub with a Commitment to Service
Beyond being a fantastic place to live, Aldersgate is a thriving ecosystem where residents actively engage in giving back, creating a ripple effect that benefits the entire region. The expansive grounds are not only home to a diverse range of beautiful living options, but also several non-profit organizations that enrich both the lives of the residents and the surrounding community. Here are a few key non-profit organizations Aldersgate hosts on campus and partners with regularly:
- Urban Farm: Urban Farm is a welcoming, green space on Aldersgate’s campus, run by the Carolina Farm Trust. This initiative is a farm in the middle of the city with active fields designed to provide local and fresh food to the East Charlotte community and be a community hub and educate students and adults about sustainability.
- Non-profit Conference Building The Community Impact Center at Aldersgate: This conference center serves as a hub for organizations like Charlotte is Home, ourBRIDGE for Kids, Carolina Migrant Network, Charlotte Community Health Clinic, Charlotte EAST and GenOne. These organizations focus on various social issues, from refugee support to education and healthcare, providing vital services that benefit the wider community. Aldersgate is honored to host their leadership in this on-campus building.
- ourBRIDGE for Kids: Located on the front of the campus, this after-school program supports newly arrived refugee and immigrant families, offering children a safe space to learn and thrive. Residents often volunteer their time and skills, fostering meaningful connections between generations.
- Monarch Homes: This unique home provides support for adult women with intellectual disabilities, allowing them to live with more independence.
- Springhouse Square: This soon-to-be-built, mixed-income community will be a critical resource to the East Charlotte community. Almost 85% of the community’s apartments will be reserved for individuals over 55, with the remaining housing reserved for families and the community team, aligning with Aldersgate’s mission to honor elders. When built, Springhouse Square will be a beautiful hub for connection and service to the greater community, enriching the lives of residents while promoting a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
- Habitat for Humanity: While not physically located on Aldersgate’s campus, Habitat for Humanity is a cause close to the hearts of team members and residents. Boris Henderson, Aldersgate’s very own Senior Director of Community Engagement, splits his time serving on Habitat for Humanity’s Board. Several Aldersgate residents actively participate and volunteer to improve the lives of families in need. The necessity of a safe and affirming home is foundational to Aldersgate’s values, and participating in this crucial organization is just one way that community members take part in giving back.
Empowering Residents to Empower their Community.
Aldersgate encourages its residents to engage with all of their non-profit partners and more, fostering a spirit of volunteerism that enables them to be active and involved in their community. This multigenerational symbiosis helps to create a stronger, more vibrant Charlotte.
Aldersgate stands as a testament to what a 62+ community can be when it is rooted in service and community engagement. It’s a place where time is not just enjoyed, but volunteered, in the spirit of giving back and making a difference. A move to Aldersgate means living in a beautiful setting and putting 232 acres of space to good use every day.
