Farm-to-table at Aldersgate: Fresh food, right at home
Imagine stepping outside your door, taking a short stroll down a scenic path and picking up farm-fresh produce grown right on the very campus where you live. No grocery store lines, no long trips—just fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs at your fingertips. That’s exactly what’s happening at Aldersgate, thanks to its partnership with Carolina Farm Trust and the Urban Farm.
A farm in the heart of Aldersgate
Nestled within Aldersgate’s 6.7-acre Urban Farm, this innovative project is changing the way residents and the surrounding Charlotte community access fresh food. What was once just a vision for sustainability and food security has become a thriving farm, growing everything from tomatoes and squash to fresh basil and even producing local honey.
The farm isn’t just nearby—it integrates into everyday life. Residents can walk over to pick up fresh produce, learn about sustainable farming or simply enjoy the natural beauty of the space. The Urban Farm is a vibrant part of the Aldersgate community, fostering health, education and connection.
More than just a farm—it’s a movement
Aldersgate’s collaboration with Carolina Farm Trust goes beyond just growing food. It’s about creating connections, ensuring food accessibility and supporting local farmers. The farm accepts EBT and SNAP, making fresh, healthy produce available to more families in the Charlotte area. It also serves as an educational space, bringing together different generations to learn about agriculture, sustainability and healthy eating.
Zack Wyatt, Director of Carolina Farm Trust, said, “In the next decade or so, urban farms are going to play a major role in our food system. I think urban farms are really going to drive the importance and relevance of rural farms just because of the generations upon generations that have lost what farming really is.”
Best of all, Carolina Farm Trust stocks regional products, fruits, vegetables and small batch packaged goods produced by Carolina farms. So you can think of the Urban Farm as part of a local hub of a larger network. However, like all grassroots movements, it counts on customers to support its success.
Carolina Farm Trust delivers farm-fresh food straight to the community through its food truck and pop-up produce markets. Every Wednesday from 12-4pm, they provide high-quality produce and freshly prepared meals at 511 S. Hoskins Rd, Charlotte, NC 28208, making fresh, nutritious food accessible to all.
Farm-to-table, right where you live
For Aldersgate residents, the farm isn’t just a nice addition—it’s an everyday benefit. The produce grown here is incorporated into meals served on campus, meaning that a salad at lunch might feature lettuce grown just steps away. It’s farm-to-table in the most literal sense and it reinforces Aldersgate’s commitment to health, sustainability and community.
This is the future of food—fresh, local and accessible. And at Aldersgate, it’s not just an idea—it’s a way of life.
